When the return window starts
For Target.com and Target app orders, the clock starts when the order is delivered, when a Shipt shopper delivers it, or when you pick it up in store.
There’s one exception: if you paid for an online order with an EBT card, Target counts the 90 days from the day the item shipped (or was delivered by Shipt, or was ready for pickup), which can be several days before it reached you.
Target doesn’t say whether a mailed return has to be started, shipped or received by the last day. If you’re mailing something back near the deadline, start early.

Exceptions that change the deadline
Electronics and Apple. Electronics and entertainment items have 30 days. Apple and Beats products, including iPhones, have 14. Target doesn’t publish a list of what counts as an “entertainment item,” so if you’re unsure, the 30-day date is the careful one. Apple products have a 14-day window at Apple too: see Apple’s return policy.
Phones. Mobile phones bought in a store or by Order Pickup have 14 days, and an opened phone can carry a restocking charge of up to $35 where allowed.
Target’s own brands. Items from Target Owned Brands can be returned for up to a year, with a receipt. Target’s app keeps a purchase history that works as a receipt.
Limited-time designer collections. These aren’t covered by the one-year Target-brand policy. Target says they typically have two weeks, and the product page shows the actual window.
Opened media and airbeds. Once opened, music, movies, video games and software can only be exchanged for the same title, and airbeds for a similar airbed. Target doesn’t give a separate window for those exchanges.
Anything with its own printed policy. Target says some items carry a different policy on the receipt, packing slip or product page. When they do, that’s the one that applies.
Items sold by Target Plus partners
Some items on Target.com are sold by other companies through Target Plus; the order shows who sold each one. Those items have 30 days from when you receive them, not 90. They go back to Target, in a store or by mail, and a store will turn away a partner return without an eligible receipt. Target emails a receipt for these items when they ship and again when they’re delivered.
Some partner items have a shorter window shown on their product page, and some are final sale. Target’s partner policy mentions refunds, not exchanges.
Online orders and store purchases
The windows are the same either way; only the start differs. You can return an online order at any Target store, at Drive Up, or by mail. A few items, such as some hazardous materials, can only go back to a store.
Target Circle Card and Circle 360
Circle Card. If you paid with a Target Circle Card (debit, credit or Mastercard), you get 30 more days on top of each item’s own window: 90 becomes 120, 30 becomes 60, 14 becomes 44. The extra days don’t apply to Target Owned Brand items, Target Optical purchases, non-returnable items, contract phones, or online SNAP purchases paid with EBT and the card.
Circle 360. If you’re a Circle 360 member, you get 30 more days on orders placed on Target.com or in the Target app, with similar exclusions (Target Optical, final sale items, contract phones, online SNAP purchases paid with EBT).
What Target’s terms don’t say. Neither program’s terms say whether the extra days apply to items sold by Target Plus partners, and the Circle 360 terms don’t say whether they apply to Target Owned Brand items. Target’s returns help page describes the extra days as applying to items bought with the card; the Circle 360 terms don’t mention that condition. Until Target says so, count on the shorter date for those items.
Holiday returns
Target hadn’t posted holiday return terms for 2026 when we last checked this page (Oct 13, 2026). We’ll update this page when it does.
Target’s returns page also says items in holiday and other limited-run collections may have their own return terms, so check the receipt or the item’s page.
Gifts and returns without a receipt
A gift can go back to a store with a gift receipt or packing slip, and you’ll get a Target GiftCard. A store can’t process a gift return on the same day the gift was bought. Gifts from Target Plus partners are refunded as a Target GiftCard too.
Registry gifts have more time: most new, unopened items from a baby or wedding registry can be returned up to a year after the event date, in store with the registry’s return barcode. Wish list gifts have 90 days from when they were bought.
Without a receipt, a store can often look up the purchase from the card you paid with. If it can’t, you may get a merchandise return card, which is store credit for Target stores and needs a government ID. Target says returns without a receipt may be limited.
How to start a return
- Find the purchase in the Target app or your Target.com account and choose Return. For store purchases, the app shows a return barcode.
- Choose a store return, Drive Up, or mail.
- In a store, go to Guest Services with the item and the barcode, receipt or payment card.
- By mail, Target emails a free return label. Pack the item with its packaging and accessories.
Purchases from Target Optical, Warby Parker, the pharmacy, Starbucks and Target Tech go back to those counters. Items bought through a delivery service such as Instacart, DoorDash, Uber Eats or the Shipt app can’t be returned to Target; the service handles the refund.
Shipping, drop-off and fees
Target’s return flow provides a free mail label, and Target says most items, large ones included, can be returned to a store “with no stocking fees.” Some large items, typically over 150 pounds, can be picked up by Target’s carrier. An opened phone can carry a restocking charge of up to $35, where allowed.
Refunds
Refunds usually go back to the card or payment you used. Purchases made with a Target GiftCard come back as a Target eGiftCard. Once Target approves a refund, it typically reaches a Circle Card within 2 days and another credit card within 5. A mailed return takes an average of 7 to 10 business days to be approved after it arrives, though Target sometimes refunds before the item gets there.
What can’t be returned
Trading cards and their accessories (not returnable since Jan 30, 2023), opened or defective collectibles, personalized items, digital downloads, opened or unsealed breast pumps, gift cards and prepaid cards, and some items sold by Target Plus partners.
Questions people ask
Does Target accept returns after 90 days?
For most items, no: 90 days is the limit, or 120 if you paid with a Target Circle Card. Target Owned Brand items have a year with a receipt, and registry gifts a year from the event date.
Can I return something I opened?
Often, but Target can refuse opened items. Most beauty products are the exception: they can come back opened within 90 days with a receipt. Opened media and airbeds can only be exchanged.
How long do I have to return an iPhone or AirPods to Target?
14 days, because all Apple and Beats products have a 14-day window. With a Target Circle Card, 44 days, unless it’s a phone on a carrier contract.
Why does my Target order show a different seller?
It was sold by a Target Plus partner. Those items have 30 days, need proof of purchase in store, and some are final sale.
What this page doesn’t settle
- Whether Circle Card or Circle 360 extra days apply to Target Plus partner items.
- Whether Circle 360’s extra days apply to Target Owned Brand items.
- Whether a Circle 360 member has to pay with a Circle Card to get the extra days.
- Whether a mailed return must reach Target by the deadline or only be sent.
Target’s published pages don’t answer these. If one matters for something you bought, ask Target before relying on the later date.

How we keep this page current
We read this guide against Target’s pages listed above at least once a month, and every week from November through January. “Last checked” is the last day every rule on this page was read against them; “Last changed” is the last day the guide’s content changed. Target decides what it accepts: if your receipt, order page or the item’s page says something different, that applies to your purchase. How we check these guides.
