When the return window starts
For Walmart.com orders, Walmart’s policy says “90 days after purchase or upon receipt” and doesn’t say which one applies to a shipped order. Walmart says your purchase history on Walmart.com shows the latest eligible return date for each item, so check there. If you can’t, count from the order date to be safe.
Walmart’s pages don’t say whether you need to start the return, ship it, or have it arrive by the last day. For major appliances and for Marketplace luxury and collectible items, Walmart says to start the return within the window.

Exceptions that change the deadline
Major appliances: 2 days. Walmart says you can start a return of a major appliance for a full refund within 2 days of accepted delivery. If it’s still unopened, uninstalled and factory sealed, you can return it up to 30 days after delivery, and Marketplace sellers can charge a restocking fee of up to 20%. Major appliances can’t go back to a store.
Electronics and many home items: 30 days. Consumer electronics, PCs and PC components, cooling and heating (air conditioners, heaters, air purifiers, humidifiers, fans), vacuums and floorcare, electric bikes and scooters, and hoverboards all get 30 days.
Phones: 14 days. Most wireless phones get 14 days. Walmart lists Verizon postpaid phones at 30 days. Opened unlocked phones can only be exchanged, within 14 days.
Vision and hearing: 60 days. Contact lenses, hearing aids and prescription glasses get 60 days.
Exchange only once opened. Opened drones and projectors can be exchanged within 30 days. Opened air beds, air mattresses, power generators and durable medical equipment can be exchanged within 90 days. New, unopened items can still be returned for a refund.
Resold items. Restored items in Like New, Good or Fair condition get 90 days. Restored Premium and most Pre-Owned items get 30 days, and some of them have a shorter window or a restocking fee. Walmart also says exceptions apply to Resold items in the holiday season and to certain electronics, collectibles and luxury fashion items. The item’s return details show its terms.
Walmart brands with a promise on the package. Walmart says private brand items with a satisfaction promise on the package aren’t held to the 90-day period. Walmart’s pages don’t give another window, so check the package.
Items sold by other sellers on Walmart.com
Items sold and shipped by a Marketplace seller follow that seller’s policy, within Walmart’s minimum standards. Most can be returned within 30 days. Walmart’s Marketplace page gives consumer electronics (computers, tablets, cameras, game consoles, phones and more) 14 days, and luxury and collectible items 14 days from when you receive them. Some sellers charge a restocking fee of up to 20%. The item page’s return details show the seller’s terms.
Walmart’s corporate policy lists Marketplace items and consumer electronics at 30 days, so its pages don’t fully agree on Marketplace electronics. The shorter 14 days is the safe date.
Online orders and store purchases
The same policy covers Walmart stores, Walmart.com and Walmart Business. You can return most online orders at a store, but freight, oversized and heavy items can’t go to stores, and perishable online orders can’t be mailed back.
Holiday returns
Walmart’s return policy has a holiday line with no year on it: most items bought between Oct 1 and Dec 31 can be returned until Jan 31. Walmart lists exceptions, such as wireless phones, protection plans, major appliances, Dyson products, and select seasonal and luxury goods, and says Marketplace seller participation varies.
That line doesn’t move an item’s own deadline. Walmart doesn’t say which items it covers beyond “most,” or whether the 30-day and 60-day categories, like electronics and vacuums, get the Jan 31 date. Until Walmart says otherwise, use the item’s normal window.
Memberships and store cards
Walmart+ doesn’t add return time. Members get extra ways to send things back, including a pickup from home.
Gifts and returns without a receipt
With a gift receipt, you can exchange the item, get a Walmart gift card, or have it credited to the giver’s original payment. Without a gift receipt, it’s an exchange or a Walmart gift card.
No receipt? Walmart says it can try to look up store purchases by the debit or credit card you used, and online orders by phone number or email. If it can’t, you’ll need a valid government photo ID, and an accepted return is refunded on a Walmart gift card. Walmart limits how often you can do this.
How to start a return
- In the Walmart app or on Walmart.com, open your purchase history and find the item.
- Choose to start a return, pick a reason, and choose a refund or a replacement.
- Pick a method: a Walmart store, mail, a FedEx Office drop-off, or a scheduled pickup.
- For a store return, bring the barcode or return email. For mail, print the label and drop it at USPS or FedEx.
Shipping, drop-off and fees
Walmart says returns by mail are free, and you can also return in store or curbside, or schedule a FedEx pickup. FedEx Office locations take repacked items without a printed label. Outbound shipping charges aren’t always refunded.
Restocking fees come from Marketplace sellers (up to 20%) and from late returns of unopened major appliances (up to 20%).
Before you return: take apart anything that needed assembly before bringing it to a store, leave the original battery in rechargeable items, and drain fuel from lawn equipment. Walmart can refuse returns that show excessive use, alteration or abuse.
Refunds
With a receipt or order number, Walmart refunds to the original payment. Walmart’s refund table lists cash as immediate, credit cards and debit cards with a PIN as up to 7 days, and Walmart gift cards and Walmart Balance as up to 3 hours. Card refunds without a receipt may take up to 7 business days.
For Marketplace returns started online, Walmart says the refund is processed when the carrier scans the package.
What can’t be returned
Walmart and Marketplace sellers won’t take back, replace or refund these, among others:
- Alcohol and tobacco
- Air guns, BB guns, bows and crossbows, bear spray and pepper spray
- Diabetic supplies, home test kits, and pregnancy and ovulation tests
- Trading cards, opened or unopened
- Precious metals such as gold bars and coins
- Used or mounted tires, wheels and rims
- Gift cards, prepaid phone and gaming cards, SIM cards, software downloads and video on demand
Questions people ask
Does Walmart’s 90 days start when I order or when it arrives?
Walmart’s policy says “after purchase or upon receipt” without saying which applies to online orders. Your purchase history shows the exact last day. If you can’t check, count from the order date.
How long do I have to return a TV or laptop to Walmart?
30 days if Walmart sold it. If a Marketplace seller sold and shipped it, Walmart’s Marketplace page says 14 days.
Can I return a refrigerator or washer to Walmart?
Only within 2 days of delivery for a full refund, or up to 30 days if it’s unopened and still factory sealed. Start it online; stores don’t take major appliances.
What this page doesn’t settle
- Whether the 90 days for online orders start at the order or at delivery. Check your purchase history.
- Whether the holiday line covers electronics, vacuums and other 30-day items bought in October.
- Which window applies to a private brand item with a promise on its package.
Walmart’s published pages don’t answer these. If one matters for something you bought, ask Walmart before relying on the later date.

How we keep this page current
We read this guide against Walmart’s pages listed above at least once a month, and every week from November through January. “Last checked” is the last day every rule on this page was read against them; “Last changed” is the last day the guide’s content changed. Walmart decides what it accepts: if your receipt, order page or the item’s page says something different, that applies to your purchase. How we check these guides.
